BJSS Swimmer Sets The Standards In Both Sporting And Academic Achievements

SYNCHRONISED swimmer Emanuelle Mah Thil Da has proven that sport was no hindrance to academic excellence.

The 17-year-old, who represented Malaysia in the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, scored 11As in the SPM examinations. The lanky lass from Penang was also the top scorer in Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS). She attributed her success to the guidance she received from teachers in BJSS.

“I am particularly grateful and thankful to BJSS principal Datuk Marina Chin for her guidance. I was the only student who had signed up for Science and Technology in English. Marina took the initiative to teach me on Fridays. I am happy to have achieved excellent results in the SPM.

“It was just a matter of dividing my time between studies and training. I had to attend two sessions of training and also attend classes. There were also tuition sessions as well. I managed to plan my daily programme well. The teachers were certainly an inspiration and assisted me all the way,” said Emanuelle after a certificate presentation at BJSS recently.

Emanuelle, who won three gold medals in the SEA Games in Indonesia, is keen to pursue her studies in either actuarial science or business finance. As a student with 11As, she is looking forward to obtaining a scholarship. Currently, she is based at the National Sports Council (NSC) and is training for the Japan Open in May and the Malaysia Games in June.

Besides Emanuelle, nine other students also achieved excellent results in the SPM. Three spikers — Chia You Jing, Sim Jian Qin and Yew Weng Keong — from the Science stream were also impressive. You Jing had eight As, Jian Chin Qin seven and Weng Keong, six As.

The other six — Ti Wei Chye (badminton), Nurul Falena Gunasekara Muhammad Lazri (athletics), Norezatti Shasha Mohamad Rosli (athletics), Lee Wan Nin (gymnastics), Sylvia Kavita Kumares (badminton) and Lee Mei Yan (volleyball) — were from the Arts stream.

Wei Chye had eight As, Nurul Falena seven As, Norezatti Shasha and Wan Nin six As each while Sylvia Kavita and Mei Yan scored five As.

The top students in the PMR were Lim Wen Yi (athletics), S. Shankar Satish Chandran (cricket), Shahzan Shah Misfahul Muneer (badminton) and Mohamad Qayyum Mohamad Izlan (athletics). Wen Yi scored eight As while Shakar, Shahzan Shah and Mohamad Qayyum had seven As each.

Education Ministry sports division director Ee Hong said she was pleased with the excellent results shown by the BJSS.

“The students have proven that they can excel in both sports and studies. We would like to see them continue to be active in sports as well as studies,” said Ee Hong.

Marina, a former national hurdler, said the overall results achieved at BJSS were encouraging.

“The passing rate in PMR was 92% while it was 97.8% for SPM. It was an improvement from the previous years. We are now looking at raising the bar for the coming years. As a former national athlete, I would like to see all the students excel in their studies and sports.

“I have always believed that education and sports are both important. I have to thank the teachers for their commitment. Without their support and co-operation, we could not have achieved the excellent results,” she said.

Katrina Ann Receives RM11,000 For Her Outstanding Feat At Malaysia Games

THE Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) paid out RM164,200 as incentive to athletes who excelled during the SEA Games in Indonesia.

Synchronised swimmer Katrina Ann Abdul Hadi, who bagged all five gold medals at stake, was rewarded with RM11,000 for her outstanding performance.

SUCH is his humility that Cheng Chu Sian was surprised when he became the first archer to collect the men's 2011 Olympian of the Year award at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Arena in Kuala Lumpur last night.

  Nur Suryani Taibi became only the second shooter in history, after Nurul Huda Baharin in 1998, to take the women's award, courtesy of her double gold medal feat in the Sea Games.

The 25-year-old Chu Sian, from Kuala Lumpur, was a surprise winner, voted by the panel ahead of diver Bryan Nickson Lomas and quadruple Sea Games gold medal-winning bowler Adrian Ang.

Chu Sian, who won the individual and team recurve gold medals at the Sea Games, said he was surprised by the panel's decision.

"I can't believe I won and this has taken me by surprise. I can't say much except that we started the year strongly and finished well too," said Chu Sian.

"Next year is a big year for us with the Olympics. I can only hope to do my best and I'm not expecting anything."

Nur Suryani was also a surprise winner.

She beat the likes of cyclist Fatehah Mustapa, who won gold medals in the women's 200m sprint, 500m time trial and team sprint at the Sea Games, and the synchronised swimming duo of Shareen Png and Katrina Ann Abdul Hadi who swept all five gold medals on offer in their events at the Sea Games.

Artistic Gymnast Receives BJSS ‘Best All-Round Student’ Award

ARTISTIC gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, currently taking part in the SEA Games in Jakarta and Palembang, was named Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Best All-Round Student at the BJSS Exellence Awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Farah was presented with the prestigious award for her impressive results in local and international competitions. She also excelled in her studies and was one of BJSS’s top students in the PMR two years ago.

It was a memorable event for her as her father was also present at the presentation ceremony.

Divers Pandalela Rinong, who is also looking forward to an impressive outing in the SEA Games, and Davis Ooi Tze Liang were voted as the Best Sportswoman and Sportsman respectively.

The annual event was organised by the BJSS Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to appreciate students who excel in both studies and sports.

BJSS principal Marina Chin said they were committed towards grooming students to excel in studies and sports.

“We are also proud that 41 students and a teacher are representing Malaysia in the SEA Games in Indonesia. Some of the students have qualified for the Olympics. But we want them to excel in studies.

“Many of the students have done extremely well in the PMR, SPM and pre-university. We are certainly proud of their achievements,’’ said Marina.

BJSS PTA president Datuk Dom Amy Hussain said they were keen to play a role in helping the students and teachers.

“The students have set good examples and should be appreciated for their sacrifices. Our aim is to help the school meet its objectives in academic and sports,’’ added Dom.

Daniel And Zyanne The Favourites

DANIEL William Bego, Bryan Nickson Lomas and Suhan Kumar are the leading candidates to win the Bukit Jalil Sport School (BJSS) Sportsboy award tonight.

Swimmer Daniel, however, looks to have an edge after his two gold and one silver medal effort in last year's Manila Sea Games, followed by a magnificent performance in the World Youth Championships in Brazil last August where he clinched two silver medals.

At the Asean schools meet, the Sarawak swimmer won five gold medals and two silver as well.

Daniel is down to compete in the butterfly races over 50m, 100m and 200m and the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events in the Asian Games on Dec 1-15.

Diver Bryan Lomas, on his part, won one gold medal in the Manila Games and one silver in the Commonwealth Games.

At the World Junior Championships in Kuala Lumpur in August, Bryan took bronze in the 10m platform.

National cricketer Suhan Kumar Alagaratnam is the other contender for the award which is celebrating its 10th anniversary today.

Suhan represented Malaysia in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) championship with the senior team. He was the best player in the ACC tournament and also at the Carl Schubert Trophy held in Singapore this year.

The other contenders include squash player Mohd Nafizwan Adnan and shuttler Mohammad Arif Latif.

In the Sportsgirl category Zyanne Lee Huey is the leading candidate for her three gold medals in synchronised swimming (solo) in last year's Malaysian Open.

National gymnast Durratun Nashihin Rosli, who won one gold and two bronze medals in the Manila Sea Games, however, could pip Zyanne to the title.

The other nominees in the category are diver Leong Mun Yee, bowler Wan Nur Atiqqa , swimmer Chai Sook Fun and national pole vaulter Noor Akmar Fatah.
