OLYMPIC bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong bagged yet another award, this time as the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) female athlete of the year, yesterday.

Archer Haziq Kamaruddin, another BJSS product who represented the country in the London Olympics in July and August, was crowned the school's male athlete of the year.

Both athletes were honoured based on excellence achieved in their sports -- Pandelela, 19, as the country's first ever female Olympic medallist and the first medal winner from a sport (diving) other than badminton.

Haziq's award was based on his swift rise in the sport, having already made his Olympic debut and now preparing for a medal attempt in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

"I'd like to thank the school for honouring me with this award. Now my focus is fully on qualifying for another Olympics," said Haziq, who is from Johor Baru.

The awards ceremony was officiated by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Raja Nong Chik also presented special awards of recognition to BJSS students who represented the country at the Olympics -- divers Pandelela, Traisy Vivien Tukiet and Wendy Ng, and archers Haziq and Nurul Shafiqah Hashim.

In his speech, Raja Nong Chik called on BJSS students to focus on discipline and developing their mental strength in order to achieve more successes in their respective sport.

He said South Korea and its swift rise in golf, a sport which the country only began to focus on seriously 10 years ago, should serve as an inspiration to BJSS students.

"To succeed in any area, these two elements are vital. We have to prove that although we have a small population we are capable of achieving world class success," said Raja Nong Chik.

Another 21 BJSS students who achieved academic excellence, were also given special awards. Among them were Lim Yin Fun (badminton) for her excellence in literature in last year's SPM exams, Farrah Ann Abdul Hadi (gymnastics) for her excellence in science and Chuah Yu Tian (athletics) the highest achiever in the pre-university course.

Pandelela Is Sportswoman Of The Year, Third Time For Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Lee Chong Wei, as expected, bagged his third National Sportsman Award, thanks largely to his achievement of winning seven international titles apart from reaching the World Championships final in 2011.

Pandelela Rinong sprang a big surprise by capturing the National Sportswoman Award, making her the first diver to earn the country’s highest accolade for athletes.

Pandelela beat the likes of squash queen Nicol David, shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, bowler Jacqueline Sijore and track cyclist Fatehah Mustapa to claim the RM20,000 prize money.

World No. 1 Nicol enjoyed a fantastic season with seven international titles on the WISPA circuit, including a record equalling sixth World Open title in Holland last year.

Honouring Sports School’s Best

WUSHU exponent Chai Fong Wei won the All-Round Student award of Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) during the Excellence Award presentation ceremony recently.

Fong Wei, a Pre-University student, was adjudged the winner ahead of diver Cheong Jun Hoong and taekwondo exponent Nurul Asfahlina Mohamed Johari, It was the second time Fong Wei, who hails from Malacca was presented the award. Her first was 2006.

Besides getting excellent results in her studies, Fong Wei was also impressive in local and international competitions this year.

In the Sukma in Kuala Terengganu, Fong Wei won the gold medal in the Chang Quan event while she was a bronze medallist in the Dao Shu event in the World Wushu championships in China and Asian Wushu Championships in Macau.

Fong Wei also won bronze medals in the Dao Shu and Gun Shu events in the Beijing Wushu championships during the Olympics.

Badminton players Ow Yao Han and Yew Hong Kheng won the Sportsboy award while diver Elizabeth Jimie was named as the Sportsgirl.

The Most Promising Sportsboy award went to athlete Muhd Ajmal Aiman Mat Hassan and the Most Promising Sportsgirl award went to diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg.

The BJSS hockey team received the special award for winning the Malaysia Hockey Federation (MHF) junior league.

Education Ministry deputy director-general (general education operations) Datuk Noor Rezan Bapoo Hashim, who presented the awards to the winners, commended the students for excelling in both studies and sports.

“But I would like to remind the students to always respect the elders. The Ministry is also proud of the success achieved by students from not only the BJSS but also from the Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS). We hope more students from these schools will excel in sports and studies,’’ said Noor Rezan.

Azlan And Durratun Clinch Top BJSS Honours

KUALA LUMPUR: Shooter Azlan Johari and rhythmic gymnast Durratun Nashihin Rosli claimed the top honours in the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) sports awards ceremony at the Olympic Hall yesterday.

Azlan, who is one of the shooters under the Gemilang 2006 programme, beat four other nominees – Cheng Chu Sian (archery), S. Narendran (athletics), Razlan Rawi (tennis) and Adrian Ang (bowling) – to the Elite male athlete award.

Durratun, who won four gold medals in the Vietnam SEA Games last year, prevailed over G. Shamani (archery), Lenny Marlina Omar (shooting), Loo Sim Fang (wushu) and Khoo Cai Lin (swimming) in the elite female category.

Azlan, who picked up four silver medals in the Asian Junior Championships early this year, expressed surprise at being named the winner.

“All the other nominees were equally good in their sports. I did not expect to be selected. This will spur me on to train harder as I want to make the squad for the SEA Games next year,” said the 17-year-old, who also won two gold medals and two silvers in the Singapore Open this year.

The 16-year-old Durratun was a favourite for the award based on her status as the national No. 1.

She was impressive in international competitions this year – bagging one gold and one silver in the recent Asean Schools Championships. She was also part of the team who won a bronze for the first time in the Asian Championships in China in June.

Sim Fang did not go back empty-handed. The wushu exponent was named the best all-round athlete – an award for excellence in sports and academic studies.

The 17-year-old Sim Fang, who scored 5As in the SPM trials recently, also bagged three gold medals in the Asian Junior Championships this year and in her debut in the SEA Games last year, she won a bronze.

Olympic divers Bryan Nickson and Gracie Junita took the award for the most promising male and female athletes respectively.
