Her father, Pamg A/K Joheng received the trophy, medal and RM5,000 cash on behalf of Pandelela, handed by Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong at the MSSC-Milo Sports Award 2010, here today.
The 18-year-old diver, a Bidayuh, could not attend the award presentation as she was with the national diving squad in China as part of the preparation for the SEA Games in Indonesia in November.
Pamg, when approached by reporters after the presentation ceremony, said he was proud of the success of his daughter, who is a pre-university student at the Bukit Jalil Sports School.
"I hope this award will inspire her to put up an outstanding performance at the Olympic Games (2012 in London),” he said.
Among her best achievements throughout the whole of last year which qualified her to compete in the world”s biggest sports meet is winning the gold medal in the 10m Individual Platform event and the silver in the 10m Rhythmic Platform together with another national diver Leong Mun Yee at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi, India.
In addition, she also won the silver medal together with Mun Yee in the 10m Rhythmic Platform and the bronze in the 10m Individual Platform at the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou, China.
Besides Pandelela, former national rhythmic gymnast Elaine Koon also received the Sports Girl award in the form of a medal and RM5,000 in cash for her outstanding achievements.
Among the best achievements by the Form Five student of the Bukit Jalil Sports School were three gold medals in the rope, ball and ribbon events in Sukma 2010 in Melaka besides winning the gold in the hoop event, a silver medal in the ball event and three bronze medals in the overall individual category for the rope and ribbon at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Selangor School Sports Council was the MSSC champion for the 11th time consecutively since winning it in 2001 when it amassed the highest point for the 24 types of sports contested at the MSSC throughout last year.
