PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s hopes of winning a squash double at the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China, Monday went up in smoke.
Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student Vanessa Raj lived up to her top billing, scoring an 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 win over Hong Kong’s Pansy Chan Pui Hei in 52 minutes to clinch the girls’ gold. It was Malaysia’s first gold in the Games.
The win was the perfect answer from Vanessa after a poor outing in the Women’s World Junior Team Championships in Poland last month.
There was, however, no joy for Mohd Syafiq Kamal. He was beaten 9-11, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11 in 57 minutes by top seed Kush Kumar of India in the boys’ final.
The Malaysians – boys and girls – will play in the team event Tuesday.
The boys will start their campaign against Hong Kong. Malaysia are in Pool B with Japan, Kuwait, Indonesia and Thailand.
The girls’ first match in Pool A is against Japan. China are also in the three-team group.
Malaysia have so far won one gold, two silvers and a bronze. Last Saturday, diver Loh Zhiayi won Malaysia’s first medal when she took silver in the girls’ 10m platform. Ng Eain Yow won the bronze by virtue of being a semi-finalist in the boys’ squash event.
