Malaysia’s Two Sports Schools Urged To Get Global Recognition

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s two Sports Schools - in Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar - have been urged to improve on their achievements and gain worldwide recognition as a model for academic and sporting excellence.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said that the ultimate aim for the Malaysia Sports Schools is to be a leader in the development of sports in the country and ensure that potential champions are groomed with proper guidance from the grassroot levels.

“Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar must strife to be different and we are ready to provide all the assistance they need in order to be different from the rest of the schools in Malaysia.

"These two schools must carve their own niche so that they can be recognized through their individual achievements and also act as the catalyst for the development of sports in the country,” he said on Friday.

The Minister on Friday launched the School High Performance Sports Programme, which will target at identifying talented school children at the lower age groups and groom them into champions.

He said that the programme is divided into three categories.

The first involves strengthening the fabrics of the existing two Sports Schools and ensuring the three new schools to be built will also have good programmes in place, initiating exchange programmes with Sports Schools from other countries and finally a programme for schools at the grassroot level throughout Malaysia.

“The plan for the grassroot development will be tabled at the Cabinet Committee for Sports when they met on July 31. Once that is accepted then we will start to implement it. I have said before that sports development must start at the school level and there is a need for wider participation in the schools,” he added.

The three new Sports Schools, which will be built over the next few years, will be in Pahang, Perlis and Sabah.
