Student Athletes Make Parents And Teachers Proud

IT was a proud moment for former national cyclist Datuk Ng Joo Ngan when his daughter Jillian Ng Siew Mei was adjudged one of the top students in the matriculation programme at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

Joo Ngan, who had represented Malaysia in many international competitions, said he was suprprised with Siew Mei’s excellent results in studies as well a sports.

“I was not the studious type during my younger days. I had devoted my time to cycling. But my daughter had proven otherwise. I was overwhelmed by emotions when she went on stage to receive her scroll,’’ said Joo Ngan.

He also disclosed that he had encouraged Siew Mei to take up cycling. But his wife Datin Nancy Teoh was against the idea.

“My wife was afraid that my daughter will sustain injuries while cycling. That’s the reason why Siew Mei opted for synchronised swimming. After seeing her progress in synchronised swimming, I do not have any reason to complain.

“She has made us proud and we are happy,’’ said Joo Ngan.

Siew Mei, who is pursuing a event management course at the Taylors University College in Kuala Lumpur, was a student at the BJSS for eight years. The 19-year-old Siew Mei, who has represented Malaysia in the 2006 Doha Asian Games as well as the 2007 World championships,said she enjoyed her stay in the BJSS.

“I joined the BJSS when I was in Form One. The teachers were very helpful. Without their guidance, I don’t think I could have excelled in my studies and sports.

“I was able to divide my time between synchronised swimming and studies,’’ said Siew Mei.

Besides Siew Mei, badminton player Michelle Yeow Mei Zi, athlete Phang Hua Mei, synchronised swimmer Lee Zhien Huey and artistic gymnast Nabihah Ali were ranked among the top students.

BJSS principal Marina Chin said she was happy with the students’ excellent results.

“Now you all have another journey to continue. I would like to see all you students do well in university,’’ said Chin.

Former national quartermiler Sean Paul was also present at the ceremony. He shared his experience with the students.

“There is no short cut to success in sports and studies. You have to overcome the odds to excel in both,’’ said Paul.

Education Ministry sports division deputy director Jalaudin Othman presented the certificates to the students.

MALAYSIAN CONTINGENT BEGINS TRAINING FOR ASEAN SCHOOLS MEET

THE Malaysian contingent, for the Asean Schools Games (ASG) in Kuala Lumpur, will start centralised training today.

All the athletes involved in the 10 sports — netball, volleyball, gymnastics, golf, badminton, basketball, hockey, aquatics, athletics and sepak takraw — will be based at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

The Selangor Education Department have been given the responsibility to co-ordinate five events — volleyball, golf, aquatics, athletics and sepak takraw — while the Federal Territories Education Department will be in charge of five sports — netball, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), badminton, basketball and hockey.

As the co-ordinators, both FT and Selangor will be providing the technical expertise.

BJSS principal Marina Chin is the chef-de-mission for the Malaysian contingent.

However, three sports — basketball, netball and volleyball — will be reporting late. The basketball team, with the majority of the players from the ASG squad, are involved in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship in Myanmar.

The players from the netball squad are representing Malaysia in the Asian Junior championship in India while the volleyball squad are in Indonesia for a training stint.

The Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) have shortlisted the players. They were identified during the recent MSSM championships as well as the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

During the centralised training, the Malaysian teams will get the chance to train at the competition venues.

Young Athletes Give Their All On The Track

THE Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) International Combined Events championships will be a bigger affair next year.

The inaugural championships, organised by the BJSS, at the National Sports Council (NSC) training centre in Bukit Jalil, were a big success with six teams taking part in the event.

BJSS principal Marina Chin said they were encouraged by the response and feedback from the participating teams.

The championships were a platform for Form One students from the participating teams to evaluate their progress. All participants had to take part in the six events — 80m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 800m, 100m and long jump — as well as the medley relay for both both boys and girls.

Besides the BJSS, the other schools involved in the championships were SMK Seri Sentosa, Bandar Penawar Sports School, Tun Hussein Onn Sports School (Johor), SMK Putra (Kelantan) and Singapore Sports School.

Marina, a former national hurdler, said the results were good.

“More importantly, we had created an opporunity for the students to take part in a competition, Sometime ago, the National Sports Council (NSC) had the Tunas Cemerlang programme and the students, basically in Form One, were able to take part.

“But the event has been discontinued which is why we have initiated this programme. Two schools from Australia and one from Thailand have already agreed to be part of next year’s programme. We are also looking at inviting a school from South Africa,’’ she said.

Big winners: The BJSS team were the overall champions.

In the boys’ category, BJSS’ Ardiyanshah Saman won the gold medal with 4090 points while SMK Hussein Onn’s Muhammad Afiq Ahmad Naim and Muhammad Nurulharitulfariz were second and third with 3860 and 3720 points, respectively.

SMK Hussein Onn’s Nurul Shafika Mohd Razak collected 4350 points to win the gold medal in the girls’ section. The second and third spots went to BJSS’ Ling Wen Yi and Fatin Izzati Ahmad with 3790 and 3670 points respectively.

BJSS were champions in the boys and girls team category. The highlight of the championships was the medley relay (100m, 200m, 300m and 400m) among the participating teams.

In the boys’ section, SMK Hussein Onn won the gold medal when they clocked 2:14.30 followed BJSS (2:16.70) and SMK Seri Sentosa (2:17.58).

SMK Seri Sentosa clocked 2:38:85 enroute to winning the gold medal in the girls’ event. BJSS settled for the second spot on 2:39.43 while SMK Hussein Onn (2:43.02) were third.

BJSS were crowned the overall champions and received the challenge trophy.

Marina said they were also looking at having two categories — Form One and Form Two — in next year’s championships.

“The participants who took part in this year’s championships will be in Form Two next year. We are keen to see their progress in the next 12 months,’’ she added.

MARINA'S THE ‘BOSS’ FOR ASEAN SCHOOLS GAMES

BUKIT Jalil Sports School (BJSS) principal Marina Chin, a former international hurdler, has been appointed the chef-de-mission for the Malaysian contingent for the Asean Schools Games (ASG) from July 12-22.

For Chin, it was a big responsibility as the carnival, catering for the Under-18 age group, will be held in the Klang Valley.

“It will be the same way as I handle BJSS. Discipline will be the priority. There will be no compromise on discipline. We will be initiating motivation sessions regularly,’’ said Chin.

Marina: We are working closely with the respective national sports associations.

The carnival involves 10 sports — athletics, swimming, hockey, netball, volleyball, basketball, sepak takraw, golf, badminton and gymnastics.

About 50% of the trainees are students of BJSS. Except for the sepak takraw team, the other teams will be based at BJSS. The sepak takraw squad is undergoing centralised training at the Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) in Johor.

As most of the training squad members are students, Chin said she would not face any problems in monitoring the athletes.

“We are also working closely with the respective national sports associations. We need their assistance for preparing the teams.

“For instance, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) will be responsible for golf team; likewise the Malaysia Basketball Association is helping the boys and girls teams and the Badminton Association of Malaysia for badminton.

“The respective associations have their own training programmes,’’ said Chin.

The National Sports Council (NSC) is also involved in the preparation for the ASG. The gymnasts - both artistic and rhythmic - are in the NSC training programme.

As part of the preparation, the teams from all 10 sports will be taking part in competitions. The netball squad, under the guidance of Choo Kon Lee, are now involved in a league in Singapore and will be playing some friendly matches against South Africa. The team will also be playing in an international competition in Adelaide, Australia, in May.

The hockey squad will be taking part in the National Junior League. With the support from the BJSS Parent-Teacher Association, the squad will be involved in a competition in Perth, Australia.

All the athletes in the training programmes will also be representing their respective states in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) and the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) championships in June.

Chin said said the Sukma and MSSM championships would give them the opportunity to evaluate the trainees before naming the final teams for the ASG.

Bukit Jalil Sports School New Recruits Settling In

THE new recruits in Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) have adapted well to the orientation programme.

BJSS senior assistant (student affairs) Suhaimi Sun Abdullah said 74 students were offered places in the school.

“We organised an orientation programme for all the students, and they showed a lot of enthusiasm throughout the three-day programme,” Suhaimi said.

After registration, the students had a session with BJSS principal Marina Chin. The students’ parents were also invited to attend the session.

Suhaimi said the parents took the opportunity to get a better idea of the school’s activities.

“Many of them were concerned about their children’s education as well as training, so we explained to them our systematic schedule. We gave them an assurance that there would be equal emphasis on education and sports.

“The parents and students were also briefed on the rules and regulations of the school,” said Suhaimi.

The students also visited the Education Ministry in Putrajaya. There was also a two-hour session on the targets for a BJSS student.

Suhaimi said the students were picked based on their excellent results in age-group competitions.

“Of course, they have to excel in their education, too. Most of the students joining Form One had good results in the UPSR. They also had done well in their respective sports,” Suhaimi said.

The students are from eight sports — athletics, badminton, squash, gymnastics, hockey, netball, volleyball and swimming — and were ranked among the top five in their sports.

The new recruits include Selangor badminton junior R. Sathiestharan, a former pupil of SJK(T) Simpang Lima in Klang, who had won the boys’ singles Under-12 gold medal in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) championships last year.

Suhaimi said the teachers would be pleased to help make the students’ stay in BJSS a comfortable one.

“We will always be ready to help and advise them if they encounter any problems,” he added.

Foo, Pandelela receive Education Ministry Sports Awards

PUTRAJAYA Oct. 30 - National swimmer Foo Jian Beng and national diver Pandelela Rinong were today awarded the ”Putera Sukan” and ”Puteri Sukan” honours at the Ministry of Education-MSSM-Milo Sports Awards 2008 ceremony.

Among Foo”s acheievments was winning the gold medal in the 100m butterfly stroke as well as in the 50m race, 100m and 4X100m free-style in the Asean Schools Swimming Championshiip as well as winning three gold medals in the Terengganu Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) Games in the 50m and 100m free-style events and the 50m butterfly event.

"I am proud for being picked for the award. I will use this award to boost my spirits in the SEA Games in Laos this December. "As this will be my first appearance in the SEA Games, I will strive for the gold medal in my favourite event, the 100m free-style,” said Foo, a former student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Section 19 Shah Alam, when met after the presentation.

He received a trophy, a medal, a certificate and RM5,000 from Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Foo, who is now busy training under former national swimmer, Marilyn Chua, who had participated in the Barcelona Olympics, said he will take part in the 100m and 50m free-style events in the Laos Sea Games.

Meanwhile, Pandelela was picked for her award following her success in getting sixth place in the 16th FINA World Diving Championship that led to her qualifying for the Beijing Olympics in the 10m platform event.

Pandelela, who is training in Kunming, China for the SEA games, was represented by her father, Pamg Anak Joheng, at the ceremony.

"Since Year One, Pandelela has been interested in swimming and diving. I always advice her not be easily disappointed and to always have strong spirit. I want her to be successful in the sport she loves,” said Pamg.

Also receiving an award was a new diving star, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, 10, from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Putrajaya 8 (2) Presint 8 Putrajaya, who got the Tunas Harapan (Puteri) award.

Her success in winning the bronze in the 3m synchronised diving board event made her the youngest winner in the Terengganu Sukan Malaysia Games last year.

The ”Tunas Harapan (Putera)” winner was Yeoh Li Tian, 10, for chess.

The student of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Yuk Chai, Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya, got third place in the Second Asean Primary Schools Olympiad and the Kuala Lumpur International Open and was champion in the Melaka MSSM Championship.

Zainab Mohamad Ashari was winner of the ”Pendidikan Khas Puteri” as she was winner of the ”Tokoh Kanak-kanak Kebangsaan (Learning Disability Category) and gold medal winner silver medal winner in the Asean 2008 Para Sports in Korat, Thailand.

Muhammad Syafiq Zulfayri Harni was winner of the ”Anugerah Pendidikan Khas Putera” award.

Also winning awards were national wusyu athlete Tai Cheau Xuen (Anugerah Khas Puteri), national equine athlete Muhammad Anas Danial Noradzman (Anugerah Khas Putera), Rozitah Hassan and Matthew Chin Hiong Choi (Anugerah Guru Berjasa) as well as Chua Hong Tham (Anugerah Tokoh Sukan - Kepimpinan).

Foo, Pandelela Penerima Anugerah Sukan Kementerian Pelajaran

PUTRAJAYA, 30 Okt (Bernama) -- Perenang Foo Jian Beng dan penerjun negara Pandelela Rinong hari ini dinobatkan sebagai penerima Anugerah Putera dan Puteri Sukan pada majlis Anugerah Sukan Kementerian Pelajaran-MSSM-Milo 2008.

Antara kejayaan Foo yang melayakkan beliau diumumkan sebagai Putera Sukan sepanjang tahun lepas ialah memenangi pingat emas acara 100m kuak kupu-kupu serta 50m, 100m dan 4x100m gaya bebas pada Kejohanan Renang Sekolah-sekolah Asean serta meraih tiga pingat emas pada Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) Terengganu melalui acara 50m dan 100m gaya bebas serta 50m kuak kupu-kupu.

"Saya berbangga dipilih sebagai penerima anugerah ini. Saya akan jadikan anugerah ini sebagai pemangkin semangat saya pada temasya Sukan SEA Laos, Disember ini.

"Memandangkan ia adalah penyertaan pertama saya dalam Sukan SEA, saya akan cuba meraih pingat emas dalam acara kegemaran saya 100m gaya bebas," kata Foo, bekas pelajar Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seksyen 19 Shah Alam ketika ditemui selepas majlis berkenaan.

Pada majlis berkenaan beliau menerima trofi, pingat, sijil dan hadiah wang tunai berjumlah RM5,000 daripada Timbalan Menteri Pelajaran Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Foo yang kini giat menjalani latihan di bawah bimbingan bekas perenang negara yang pernah beraksi pada Sukan Olimpik Barcelona, Marilyn Chua, berkata beliau akan menyertai acara 100m dan 50m gaya bebas pada Sukan SEA Laos nanti.

Sementara itu, Pandelela pula terpilih sebagai Puteri Sukan berikutan kejayaan meraih tempat keenam dalam Kejohanan Terjun Dunia FINA ke-16 yang sekaligus melayakkan beliau beraksi pada Sukan Olimpik Beijing dalam acara 10m platform.

Beliau yang sedang menjalani latihan di Kunming, China untuk persiapan menghadapi Sukan SEA diwakili bapanya, Pamg Anak Joheng pada majlis Jumaat.

"Sejak dari darjah satu, Pandelela memang minat dengan sukan renang dan terjun. Saya sentiasa menasihatinya supaya tidak mudah kecewa dan sentiasa kuat semangat. Saya juga mahu dia mencapai kejayaan tertinggi dalam sukan yang diminati itu," kata Pamg.

Turut menerima anugerah pada majlis itu ialah seorang lagi bintang baru acara terjun, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, 10, dari Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Putrajaya 8 (2) Presint 8 Putrajaya, sebagai penerima Anugerah Tunas Harapan (Puteri).

Kejayaan meraih pingat gangsa acara terjun 3m papan anjal seirama telah menjadikan beliau sebagai pemenang termuda pada Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) Terengganu tahun lepas.

Bagi Anugerah Tunas Harapan (Putera) pula menjadi milik Yeoh Li Tian, 10, yang melibatkan diri dalam sukan catur.

Pelajar Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Yuk Chai, Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya, itu pernah meraih tempat ketiga Kejohanan Olimpiad Sekolah Rendah Asean kedua dan Terbuka Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur serta menjadi johan Kejohanan Remaja Negara dan Kejohanan MSSM Melaka.

Anugerah Pendidikan Khas Puteri pula menjadi milik Tokoh Kanak-kanak Kebangsaan (Kategori Masalah Pembelajaran) dan pemenang pingat emas dan empat perak temasya Sukan Para Asean 2008 di Korat, Thailand, Zainab Mohamad Ashari.

Sementara itu, Muhammad Syafiq Zulfayri Harni menjadi penerima Anugerah Pendidikan Khas Putera.

Turut menerima anugerah pada majlis tahun ini ialah atlet wusyu negara Tai Cheau Xuen (Anugerah Khas Puteri), ekuin negara Muhammad Anas Danial Noradzman (Anugerah Khas Putera), Rozitah Hassan dan Matthew Chin Hiong Choi (Anugerah Guru Berjasa) serta Chua Hong Tham (Anugerah Tokoh Sukan - Kepimpinan).
